Why Sleepyhead Underlay

Sleepyhead is New Zealand’s most trusted mattress maker and have been designing and manufacturing in New Zealand for over 85 years.

As the only mattress manufacturer in New Zealand to make our own foam, we began manufacturing underlay as a sustainable way of using foam left over from our mattress manufacturing. Today, Sleepyhead Flooring sources offcuts from our manufacturing facilities across New Zealand, uplifted and scrap underlay from local installations, and additional foam from selected partners internationally.

We are the only flooring manufacturer or supplier in New Zealand to take back and recycle used uplifted underlay from home renovations.

As a proud New Zealand owned family company, Sleepyhead Flooring is focussed on advancing our knowledge and technology to provide New Zealanders with the best quality carpet underlays available.

Quality Guaranteed

When you choose Sleepyhead Flooring, you can do so with confidence. As one of New Zealand’s most long standing trusted brands we stand behind every product we manufacture. We offer a ‘ life of the carpet’ warranty on our range of underlay products and will repair or replace at no charge product that proves defective because of improper materials or workmanship under normal use.

Made In New Zealand

Sleepyhead Flooring is part of the family owned and operated iconic Kiwi company, designing and manufacturing all of our products in New Zealand, specifically for the demands of our local climate and our unique lifestyle. We are proud to employ over 1200 people and continue to invest in local manufacturing and supporting New Zealand communities.

Environmentally Smart

We are committed to looking after our home – New Zealand. All of our underlay products are made from 100% recycled foam. Sleepyhead Flooring’s recycling programme includes the collection of uplifted and scrap underlay from installations, which we clean and recycle, preventing it from going to landfill.

Fresh Protect

Fresh Protect is a green technology antimicrobial that is very environmentally friendly. It is derived from lauric acid in coconuts and is a natural and highly effective anti bacterial, anti fungal, and anti viral protection. Fresh Protect therefore is non-toxic, unlike other antimicrobials, and is safe for use around people and animals. This is now standard across our whole range of underlays, residential and commercial.

Thermal Insulation

Underlay is an often overlooked contributor to the overall thermal insulation of a home. Sleepyhead’s 11mm/130kg underlay has been tested to R.34, meaning that it alone contributes over a quarter of the thermal insulation required by New Zealand building codes. Combined with quality underfloor insulation, homes fitted with Sleepyhead Flooring underlay are simply warmer and cosier.

Acoustic Insulation

Sound travelling between floors in a home can be really annoying. If you’ve ever been frustrated by the thud of footsteps above, or talking below, a quality carpet underlay can drastically reduce noise levels within your home. All Sleepyhead Flooring underlay is designed to aid with acoustic insulation. For superior acoustic performance we recommend our Memory underlay, with double the sound absorption of other underlays on the market.

Performance

Underlay needs to not only feel great underfoot, it needs to perform. To back up the quality of our flooring underlay we independently test all of our products. All Sleepyhead Flooring underlay has been tested and accredited by the NZWTA to meet or exceed New Zealand's standard for soft underlays (AS 4288:2003).

Associations

Year after year Sleepyhead has been recognised as one of New Zealand’s most trusted brands. We are a registered member of Floor NZ , the association supporting flooring retailers, wholesalers and installers throughout New Zealand . Also a proud supporter of the new Workforce Development Councils that run apprentice training schemes, our aim is to be New Zealand’s underlay supplier of choice.

About Sensitive Choice®

Sensitive Choice® is the National Asthma Council of Australia’s programme to educate about the importance of asthma and allergy management.

With millions of Australians and New Zealanders suffering from asthma, and one in three of us suffering from allergies, it’s important to find ways to reduce triggers that can impact our daily lives. To make life a little easier, the Sensitive Choice butterfly was developed to help identify products and services that could be better choices for people with asthma and allergies.

Sensitive Choice works with a wide range of products across New Zealand and Australia and we’re proud to have their approval for our Refresh and Memory underlays. Our approved underlays have been tested and verified by a panel of prominent medical experts, so you can feel confident when purchasing our products.

Sleepyhead Certification

Sleepyhead Flooring underlay products have been tested and certified to comply with the New Zealand standard for soft underlays  (AS 4288:2003). All testing is conducted independently by the New Zealand Wool Testing Authority to ensure a consistent level of quality for New Zealand consumers.

When comparing underlay products, be sure to check that they meet industry standard (AS 4288:2003). These require minimum performance requirements for soft underlays and test their suitability for use in various installations, so you can be sure you’re getting the quality product you deserve.

Project Zero

At Sleepyhead, we started our journey towards a sustainable future in 2019 by launching Project Zero. As part of this project, we are creating products that are gentler on the planet: using sustainably sourced and repurposed materials and designing for recyclability. We’re also committed to using more natural and local materials, including recovered marine plastics, sustainably sourced latex and TENCEL, organic cotton, and certified NZ wool. Our environmental footprint is now part of the design process for all our product ranges.

Designed for sustainability

Mattresses

Sleepyhead Zero was the first New Zealand mattress designed to be fully recycled; closely followed by the Elements range. While almost 75% of mattress components can be recycled, these mattresses are 100% recyclable. At the end of their life, they can be returned to us to be turned into plush new carpet underlay for Kiwi homes.

Bedding

We have started using smart fibres made from recycled plastic bottles that would otherwise have gone to landfill. The bottles are cleaned and sanitised before they are melted down and pushed through something similar to a giant shower nozzle. This creates a soft fluffy fibre that mimics the feel and fluffiness of down without the allergens or ethical concerns usually associated with down products. Smart fibre is used in all of our fibre pillow products and helped give nearly 12 million used plastic bottles a new life in 2023 alone.

Packaging

In addition to using biodegradable plastics, recyclable cardboard and cotton-based reusable bags, we are replacing single-use plastic packaging with recyclable soft plastics across our ranges. We participate in The Packaging Forum's Soft Plastic Recycling Scheme, which recycles soft plastics into bags, fence posts, garden beds, and even low carbon building materials. Our Sleepyhead Zero Eco Underlay packaging is fully recyclable: the plastic can be recovered and used again, helping eliminate even more waste.

Underlay

As the only mattress manufacturer in New Zealand to make our own foam, we began creating our 100% recycled carpet underlays as a sustainable way to use foam left over from mattress production.

We are the only flooring supplier or manufacturer in New Zealand that takes back used underlay uplifted from home renovations. As long as the uplifted underlay is in good condition, we can recycle it in exactly the same way as new scrap underlay. And there’s a lot of it! It accounts for a large proportion of the underlay scrap that ends up in landfills around the country.

Approximately 80% of the recovered foam in our Zero Eco underlay is sourced here in New Zealand, keeping it out of our local landfills. The beauty of this underlay is that it can be infinitely recycled into new underlay at end of life, providing an ongoing sustainable solution for New Zealand homes.

Giving back to Aotearoa

As part of the Zero underlay program we have also partnered with Trees That Count, and have committed to plant a native tree for every house lot of Zero Eco Underlay sold and registered in the program. Trees That Count is a charity that mobilises businesses, planters and individuals to restore Aotearoa's unique biodiversity, take action on climate risk, and grow a brighter future through the planting of native trees. To date they have planted over 2 million native trees across the country.
